Siena

I somehow loose my words when I have to describe Siena, which is one of my favorite cities in Italy (and, to be honest, in the rest of the world, too). Maybe because I spend the honeymoon part of my Erasmus exchange there, trying to grasp as much of the mysteries of the Italian language as I could in one month. I had a lovely teacher Antonella and my study group was great, but even better, outside of my own classes I met some really awesome people, with whom I have kept in touch ever since - sometimes more, sometimes less. This spring when a Portuguese friend of mine suggested that we would get together in Siena this autumn, I was going through really tough times and had no slightest idea, where I would live in the autumn, if I had money and time to travel and so on.
Now I know that there are nice trips, and then there are trips that change your life, help you get back on the track, get inspired and feel like you are alive again. After unhappy times you really know how to appreciate and wonder the good time, lightness of the heart and mind, good food and wine, and great company of old friends.

Italiaaaa!

In a couple of hours I will take a metro and S-bahn here in Berlin to the main bus station, then a Meinfernbus to Leipzig (ticket from Berlin to Leipzig was only 8 € and they operate to all major cities in Germany so I might travel with them more often!) and then with my old favorite Ryanair to Pisa, then a train, or two, or three to Siena!
Most probably by the afternoon I'm so tired that I grin like an idiot when I get my first cappuccino in front of my nose and feel the sudden change of temperatures..oh yes, it should be like +27 C in Siena, where I'm heading for the weekend to have a reunion with my Erasmus friends. I'm so much looking forward to strolling on the streets of my very favorite Italian city again, going to Gelateria Nannini for ice cream - I really hope that they have the panforte flavor - and look for the familiar places that I haven't visited for 4 years.
Flight and bus tickets printed, weather checked, travel music on mp3 player, batteries for camera charged, everything in under 100 ml bottles, some Rittersport for the girls (never would dare to bring salmiakki anywhere near my French friend Clém!) and I even have done some work so I guess it's time for a short nap. Buona notte!

Itä-Berliinin taivaan alla

Juhani Seppovaaran Itä-Berliinin taivaan alla (Avain, 2006) koostuu kuvista ja pienistä kertomuksista, jotka heijastavat itäberliiniläisten nuorten aikuisten arkisia kokemuksia ennen muurin murtumista. Koska juuri tuo ajankohta on viime aikoina ollut erityisesti mielenkiintoni kohteena, lueskelin kirjan pariinkin kertaan läpi.

 

Tutkin pitkään kuvassa olevaa vanhaa karttaa, joka on Berliinin matkaoppaasta vuodelta 1929. Seppovaara kirjoittaa: "Eino Leino tunsi oppaassa esitellyn Café Unter der Lindenin nimellä Café Bauer. Leino poikkesi sinne juomaan mokkaa, tapaamaan maanmiehiään ja lukemaan Hufvudstadsbladetia sekä Päivälehteä." Joki virtaa samassa uomassa samannimisenä kuin aina, mutta kadut ja korttelit sen ympärillä ovat vaihtaneet nimeään useampaan otteeseen jopa viimeisten sadan vuoden aikana: "Leninallee on Landsberger Allee, eikä siltä risteä Ho-Chi-Minh-Strassea. Karl-Marx-Allee on Frankfurter Strasse. Alfred rakensi sen paikalle Stalinalleeta. Huomenna se saattaa olla Erich-Honecker-Allee."

Kuvat ovat välillä yhtä arkisen harmaita ja lakonisia kuin kuvauksen kohteena olevat arkiset esineet pioneeripinsseistä kukonmuotoisiin munakuppeihin, joita saa uusiotuotantoversioina esim. DDR-museosta, mutta välillä ne ovat mielikuvituksellisen värikylläisiä ja räiskyviä. Siemailin teetä aidosta DDR:stä valmistetusta teekannusta, jonka sain lahjaksi Berliinistä muuttaneelta ystävältä, ja luin isänmaan uhista:  "Länsiserkultaan Gesine oli saanut farkut. Opettaja käski raksia niistä Levis-merkin pois. Gesine neuloi merkin paikalle kangaspalasen, johon oli maalannut DDR:n ja Neuvostoliiton liput. Merkki oli opettajalle mieleen, mutta paikka takapuolen päällä sopimaton. Myös tuo ompelus piti irroittaa." Tuollaiset pienet arkiset huomiot elävöittävät DDR:n elämää huomattavasti paremmin kuin historiallisilla faktoilla ja hallitusmuotojen kuvauksilla varustetut tietokirjat.

Summer joys

I didn't travel much this summer, I would rather say that I stayed at home in Berlin (until July) and then at home in Finland (for six weeks from mid-July until the end of August) so...only now, when having returned back to Berlin, new fresh traveling ideas are filling up my head. But before turning my head for the future, here a little summary of the past weeks in form of photos.

Enjoying time with family and friends at home by cooking,baking and eating together...this is the summerly strawberry cake I made for us for midsummer's eve from the home-grown strawberries.

 

Chilling and taking the time to observe clouds (didn't have that chance too often before the holidays), and I also made good use of the new pink shoes I bought :)

 

Taking it easy on a summer cottage of a friend, in the middle of the Finnish countryside...

 

Buying all those things that you miss being abroad, like Fazer candies and rye bread.

 

Celebrating name days, birthdays and even a wedding, these are some lavender cupcakes my sister baked for her 25th birthday :)

 

I guess I traveled more in Finland than in the past years all together: I started my holidays in Joensuu & Ilosaarirock, went to Jyväskylä, good old Tampere and Lahti (without my camera!) and to Helsinki, to celebrate the end of the summer at Linnanmäki and some other nice places like Kakkugalleria where we tried several kind of sweet treats.

Surullisin juhannus

Tämä kuvastaa suurinta surkeutta, mikä suomalaisen kohtaloksi voi koitua keskikesän juhlan aikaan: muutaman kympin säästämiseksi hän päättää matkustaa juhannuslauantaina, hyvin aikaisin aamulla. Kukaan muu ei matkusta silloin, joten lento on hyvin halpa..mutta myöskään Helsinki-Vantaalle ei pääse, koska juhannuksen takia kaupunkiliikenteen bussit nuokkuvat varikoillaan perjantai-illasta pitkälle lauantai-iltapäivään, joten ainoa mahdollisuus on matkustaa perjantai-iltana ja viettää yö lentokentällä muutaman aussimatkailijan ja venäläisen perheen kanssa. Onneksi sentään Alepa oli auki.

Tulevina vuosina en kyllä aliarvioi näin ajattelemattomalla tavalla juhannuksen merkitystä henkiselle hyvinvoinnilleni.

Prague ahoi!

Some traveling plans ahead, eventually! I'm going to Prague for the Easter holiday with two of my colleagues and I started to check out this week what is actually happening there around Easter. Hannah, one of my best friends explained that there might be some whipping expected, and what I read is that it's a typical Easter Sunday tradition that the guys tie twigs together and go around whipping the girls' legs...a fertility rite :) But there are also some Easter markets to hang around, if just there weren't like million other tourists there at the same time...

What could be a trip to without any visits on cute old bookstores..as my previous trip to Prague was in the summer 2006, I have no idea anymore where I might have gone (except the Mucha museum), so I have started my researches from nothing.

 

I found this great website called Bookstore Guide that I spent quite a while reading, really nice tips and way of writing :) I might mention to the writers that some of the Berlin my favourite antiquarians are missing!

A Year in Helsinki

Just wanted to share this, because Helsinki (or let's say the Finnish landscapes) look so beautiful in it, and I had maybe a bit of Heimweh today...missing summer nights filled with light, and sunny early spring days when the snow sparkles so bright...

Cafe Butter

I have now several times gone to this great little cafe and bar Café Butter on Pappelallee, in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg. They have a great brunch (Saturdays until 15.00, Sundas until 16.00), where you can choose between different kind of salads, cheese, cold cuts, puddings, pancakes fruit salad and vegetables, as well as scrumbled eggs, chicken wings and sausages..bread isn't especially great, they seemed to have only white plain boring rolls on those two times I went there. But the rest is great, and I'm especially happy to have a good variety of vegetarian dishes and nice cappuccino. And all the fun costs only 7,90€/person, not including the drinks though. Otherwise this cute cafe serves as a café and restaurant, every day from 9am until 1am. 

I will continue my brunch explorations soon :)

Keep your cameras away!?

Haven't heard from this kind of phenomena in Berlin yet: restaurant owners or chefs would be forbidding their customers from taking photos of their food. According to New York Times it has got quite sensitive in some places, and rather embarrassing for some customers who don't see anything bad in snapping a couple of pictures with their smart phones.
Even in museums that are way more strict with photographing you see people sneaking shamelessly around with their cameras, so I can't really see how it would work for the restaurants. Personally, I would only find it annoying if a friend would take a hundred and one pictures of the same dish and not concentrate on socialising with me at all, but a few pictures wouldn't obviously get on my nerves, neither nerve the other customers or the staff.

Savukeitaan Länsi-Berliini

Lueskelin ennen joulua Savukeitaan Länsi-Berliini-oppaan ja otin nyt joulun jälkeen lainaan myös Itä-Berliinin. Ajattelin kirjoitella molemmista oman arvionsa, ensimmäisenä Länsi-Berliini-oppaasta. Jotkut muut ko. matkaoppaita lukeneet valittelivat niiden vilisevän virheitä, mutta ehkä en vaan tiennyt Berliinistä riittävästi ja siten tuo kaikki uusi tieto upposi minuun kyseenalaistamatta. No, satunnaisia kirjoitusvirheitä lukuunottamatta - se on WANNSEE eikä Wanssee!
Savukeitaan sivulla mainitaan, että Länsi-Berliini opastaa "sen lukuisiin kaupunginosiin Kreuzbergin turkkilaiskortteleista Charlottenburgin porvariskoteihin, pitkään historiaan Weimarin villeine vuosineen ja kolmannen valtakunnan raunioineen sekä kaupungin omintakeiseen elämään kulttuurien karnevaalista aina gayklubeihin, on matka modernin suurkaupungin pinnalle – ja pinnan alle. Reitti kulkee sivukatujen ja bulevardien, Gründerzeit-korttelien ja hylättyjen huvipuistojen kautta barokkisaleihin, natsien bunkkereihin ja pilkkopimeään ravintolaan, ja sen varrella kohdataan lukemattomia henkilöitä Marlene Dietrichistä maahanmuuttajiin, currywurstin myyjistä uusnatseihin ja J.F.K:stä Klaus Wowereitiin." Mielenkiintoista on tosiaan se, että opas kattaa monia kaupunginosia, myös ne, joissa turistit eivät yleensä pyöri, kuten Luoteis-Berliinissä sijaitsevat Weddingin ja Reinickendorfin. Kirjoittelin siis kotikulmiltakin muistiin muutaman vinkin, joita pitää käydä testaamassa.
Hyvää on se, että oppaassa ei ole kuvia, sillä paperi on sen laatuista, että nuokaan vähän mustavalkoiset kuvat eivät näytä hyvältä, eikä niissä olevista pytingeistä ei saa oikein selvää. Otan itse mieluummin reissuun mukaan tekstipainotteisia matkaopaskirjoja, kuten Lonely planetin tai Mondon oppaan. Valokuvia matkakohteesta löytää muutenkin ihan riittävästi netistä ja matkalehdistä, jos niitä kaipaa luomaan jotain ennakkokäsitystä paikasta. Mainiota on siis se, että oppaassa esitellään perusteellisesti kaupunginosa kerrallaan koko Länsi-Berliini ja lisäksi on vielä pohtivampia artikkeleja poliittis-historiallis-kulttuurisista näkökulmista. Siitä syntyy hieman hajanainen ja sillisalaattimainen ote, joka on paikoillen virkistävää, toisinaan taas vain ärsyttävää.

Väistämättä jää miettimään, kenelle tämä opas on tarkoitettu? Siellä on muutama vinkki kulttuurimatkailijalle, itsenäiselle matkaajalle, säästäväiselle ja perhematkaajalle, mutta jotekin se oletettu kohdeyleisö jää hieman epäselväksi. Olisi kiinnostavaa myös lukea muita Savukeitaan oppaita, niissä kun tuntuu olevan selkeästikin Itä-Eurooppa-painotus (lukuunottamatta Meksiko- ja Brasilia-oppaita!) ja siltä kannalta Berliini-oppaatkin istuvat joukkoon. Savukeitaan Berliini-oppaat täydentävä hyvin muita Berliini-oppaita, mutta en suosittelisi yksistään niitä kenenkään ensimmäiselle Berliinin-matkalle.

Are there any ecological hotels in Berlin?

I got an email from my aunt that she is coming to Berlin with a friend of hers. I got the task of finding them a cosy small ecological hotel which is reasonably priced - sound like an easy task in an eco-minded city like Berlin. What is eco anyways? That you offer organic & fair trade breakfast? Organic cotton bedsheets? Recycled furniture? That the staff is being treated in a fair way?

What I found out is that it's not easy to find out info on how ecological the different hotels are, as they stress different points on their own websites and on those reporting about them. It looks like if your search "eco hotel Berlin" you find only Landmark Eco Hotel that offers luscious green views and by the way, it's certified "eco hotel with everything that goes together with that" which doesn't mean much...I also found the helpful site of Berlin goes green, where you can find their reviews on some services. Would be nice to know where the information comes from - if the Green League reporter tells that the Bleutreu flowers are fair trade and all the materials in the hotel are chosen keeping an eye on their sustainability, why they wouldn't mention that on the hotel's website?  

When I continued the search on the German pages, I bumped to better options. If I chose a place for myself, I would choose a hotel like Almodóvar - they principles seem to correspond to what I would call transparency..yes for vegetarian, organic and regional food, sustainable energy and natural cosmetics!

For further readings I found Bio-Hotels, the biggest organic hotel group with an informative website..after all this searching I felt like relaxation so I dreamt of my next sauna visit at Top10 page (one of my favourites to find out new locations in Berlin).

Travelling with strange objects

Question of the day: Can I take a sewing machine as a hand luggage? I'm going back home to Berlin next week and I have been trying to find out if I can take my good old sewing machine as a hand luggage...I noticed that being separated from my almost 20 year old faithful sewing machine has been painful, so I decided to take it with me.

I bumped luckily to a blog of quilting mums sharing their experiences, most of them having had no problem with an odd piece of hand luggage. Funny enough, some other people seem alike fond of their sewing machines and take them even to their holidays - "There is no way I could cope for a whole week with the in-laws without my machine." :) So, I'll try the same next week!

Joululoman kirjavinkki

Joululomalla ehtii hamstrata kirjastosta kunnianhimoisen suuren kasan kirjoja. Eräs niistä oli niin mielenkiintoinen, että aloin heti katsella nettikirjakaupoista, löytäisinkö sen jostain omaksikin. Anna Kortelainen on eräs lempikirjailijoistani, taidehistorioitsija ja tutkija, jonka aikaisemmista teoksista ainakin Levoton nainen- ja Virginie! -teoksia olen lukenut innoissani. Hurmio - oireet, hoito, ennaltaehkäisy kertoo Stendhalin syndroomasta tai hurmioon sairastumisesta, kuten "joka kodin satiirisen lääkärikirjan" takakansi lupaa.

Hurmio-teos alkaa katkelmalla Stendhalina paremmin tunnetun ranskalaisen kirjailijan Marie-Henri Beylen matkapäiväskirjasta Rome, Naples et Florence, jossa hän kuvaa kokemustaan firenzeläisen Santa Croce -kirkon kappelin maalauksia katsellessaan. "Siellä, rukousjakkaran porrasaskelmalla istuen, pää takakenossa ja lukupulpettiin nojaten jotta voisin katsella kattoa, Volterrannon Sibyllat antoivat minulle ehkäpä väkevimmän mielihyvän minkä maalaus on minulle koskaan antanut. Jo ajatus Firenzessä olemisesta ja juuri näkemieni hautojen levossa olevien suurmiesten läheisyydestä oli nostanut minut eräänlaiseen ekstaasiin. Ylevän kauneuden mietiskelyyn syventyneenä minä näin kauneuden läheltä, minä ikään kuin kosketin sitä. Olin päässyt sille tunteiden tasolle, jolla kuvataiteen antamat taivaalliset tuntemukset kohtaavat intohimoiset tunteet."

Tämän teoksen kanssa tekee mieli käpertyä sohvan- tai sängynkulmaan teekupillisen kanssa, palata Firenzen maisemiin, unelmoida kohtaamisista suurten katedraalien hiljaisen majesteetillisuuden ja suurten taiteilijoiden teosten aiheuttaman hämmennyksen ja ihailun kanssa...

For list lovers

I have always liked making lists. I was thus very happy to discover a new website Top10 Berlin that lists all kind of attractions, restaurants, cafès, museums, shops, you name it. Evrn if I have read enough travel guides of Berlin (I should make some book reviews and write down my best tips from them..) I found here some new great things to discover. At least I want to go though the list of tea salons of which only Tee Tea Thé shop and tea room in Schöneberg (Golzstr. 2) is already familiar to me. I went there on a cold rainy night and had it had to choose between hundreds and hundreds of tea sorts, and their cakes were also a treat!

Away from home..

This is an illustration of a perfect afternoon spent by myself in Göttingen! Hooray, I have managed to leave behind the borders of Berlin once (!) since I came to Germany a month ago...I went to visit good old friends a bit outside of Göttingen and made a cosy afternoon stop there. I remember having gone to this café also on my previous trip and why not again - it's a true kingdom of cakes, pastries and chocolate called Cron & Lanz on Weender strasse, just in the core of the old centre of Göttingen. 

This pièce de résistance was called Grillage, which consist of sour cherries and butter cream spiced up with Kirschwasser liquer and covered with roasted almond coating (Kirschwasserbutterkrem mit Sauerkirschen und Florentiner-Decke). I enjoyed it with a cup of cappucino and a chapter of a good novel. Perfect. I recommend this as a cure for everything, and as a prevention method for autumn gloomyness, too...

Berlin dreams

After a bit of silence it's time for great great changes in my life...I will leave the peaceful green meadows of Finland behind for some time and move to the heart of central Europe...to a place that is very dear to me and that I have called my home town even when I have lived in Finland..

I went to Berlin last time in April, wandering around and wondering still how my postgraduate life will turn out to be. Then I also took these pictures on some side streets of Bergmannstrasse in Kreuzberg. Well, now I have got my degree and I know what I'll be doing the next months and where I will live. I have already found a temporary flat in a district of Berlin that is unknown to me, and share the next months of my life with another couchsurfer. I somehow feel like the best months of my life are just ahead of me. Something new, fresh and happy is about to start. I hope to dedicate more time to photographing, writing and blogging in my new home. At least I will be in a very photogenic city which I have loved to illustrate on my previous travels :)

Kirjailijoiden Lontoo

"East-End" alkaa Cityn itärajalta, jatkuen kauaksi allastelakoille ja Thamesin suulle. Siellä asuu enimmäkseen työkansaa ja köyhälistöä sekä runsaasti itämaalaista ainesta, kiinalaisia, juutalaisia y.m. East-Endin maine hengenvaarallisena seutuna alkaa jo olla tarua. Järjestys ja kuri on sielläkin moitteeton, joskin vastaantulevat oliot joskus saattavat tuoda mieleen Jack Lodonin ja muiden East-endiä kuvanneiden kirjailijain henkilöitä. Gradun kirjoittamisen tueksi ja mielen virkistykseksi olen lukenut viime viikkoina muutakin Lontooseen liittyvää kuin kaunokirjallisuutta ja kirjallisuudenteoriaa. SKS:n julkaisema Lontoo - kirjailijan kaupunki (toim. Marjaana Niemi, 2008) on yhtä viihdyttävää, valaisevaa ja mielenkiintoista luettavaa kuin aikaisemmin samasta sarjasta lukemani Pariisi- ja Berliini-kokoelmat: suomalaiset kirjailijat, taitelijat ym. kirjoittavat vaikutelmiaan kaupungista, sen asukkaista, luonteesta, siellä asumisesta ja monista muista seikoista. Lievetekstin mukaan "Kirjasarja johdattaa suomalaisten kirjailijoiden jalanjäljissä Euroopan kaupunkeihin. Mitä suomalaiset kirjailijat näkivät ja kokivat Lontoossa? Matkustaminen on tuonut suomalaisille kirjailijoille elämyksiä, kokemuksia ja aineistoa kirjallisiisn töihin. Sitaatit romaaneista, novelleista, muistelmista, kirjeistä ja postikorteista antavat lukijoille mahdollisuuden matkustaa ja jakaa kokemukset kirjailijan kanssa."

Omalle matkakirjojen lukulistalle kertyy myös lisää luettavaa. Lontoon kuvauksiin liittyen kiinnostaisi lukea ainakin Aino Kallaksen julkaisut päiväkirjat (1955-1957), Lasse Lehtisen Minä ja Thatcher. Lontoon matkapöytäkirja (1989) ja Kerttu Aitolan Lontoonrakeita (2004).

Dream dream dream

Lago di Como, in July 2008...my last days in Italy after 10 months of Erasmus exchange...

Why did I start this blog? I had no time for other one, or so it seemed as I had a long break with no new posts..I have been trying to figure our how to change it altogether to match a broader scale of interests, so here I try to keep it simple and short. So the main purposes of this blog could be listed here and now:

-write down some daily impressions about traveling for myself, my friends, family and whoever would like to read
- share some pictures from the past and maybe even from present, if I travel somewhere in the near future)
-keep track of my travel plans
-at least try to keep travel tips, advice from friends, travel guides, magazines and so on in some order! I have accumulated in my travel diaries and million little notes that I loose a lot of information that could be useful for some others, too. I know that the locals know always the best where to go and what to do, so I also want to write down some tips for my friends who might ask "what do you suggest I should do in Venice?"
- I dream about traveling all the time so maybe this is a way to nourish my fever rather than calm it down :)

Valentine's travels

LOVER! What a great place to go for a Valentine's day, suggests Visit Britain! :) I read occasionally those Visit Britain newsletters that I have subscribed to - maybe after participating in a competition for free flights? :) Sometimes there are some nice tips or at least some lovely pictures of green landscapes that make me dream of traveling there again. My last time in UK was in December 2006, so I should maybe take some of those tips more seriously!

What about this? "Recreate a romantic movie moment in Lancashire! If you fancy a Brief Encounter, snatch a kiss under the clock at Carnforth Station which looks much as it did in the 1945 David Lean film. For more recent romance seek out the locations of Four Weddings and a Funeral or Notting Hill in London."
